Build Your Own Batement's Bay (B.Y.O.B.B)

Studio tutor: Maud Cassaignau

BYOBB is a project that is a response to providing a radical solution to Batemans Bay, a town located in New South Wales that is predicted to be the first flooded by rising sea levels. My partner, Pearl Dempsey and I, inspired by the beginnings of Venice proposed that the future population of Batemans Bay to live in scaffolding that would provoke others to build a self-sustaining community, As we speculate that some time in the future housing prices will become increasingly unaffordable and a rise in trend of people working from home, we suggest that these pods are modular yet flexible when customised, Despite it being a bleak outlook for the town, we hope that this proposal would be optimistic and provide some possible insights for the community.

Directophobia

Tutor: Antra Svarcs

This segment is a part of my Illustration for Narrative elective during my masters. I’ve always been fascinated by illustrations, and how the composition of lines, colouring and placement could affect the complete narrative.

For this assignment, we were to turn our phobias into a marketing product. Having always dreaded being asked for directions, these were translated into a series of arrows traversing iconic landscapes of European cities (I also get very nervous when I travel in a place where I can barely speak their language). These are some mock up proposals for guidebook covers.

Big West House

Tutors: Nigel Bertram, Marie le Touze, Koichi Suzuno, Minaho Sakane

One of my favourite studio projects. This studio was a collaboration between NMBW Architects and TORAFU Architects. The design of this house was used as an installation and a stage for public performance at the Big West Festival in Footscray which would later be reinstalled in a plot of land for a family in need. My team - the window team constructed different window mechanisms that challenged the versatility of the prescribed object. The reward was that I was able to design something that would allow me to look after a family indirectly.

Line Works

Tutor: Michael Artemenko

First year communications project. Our assignment was to redraw an architecture in the style of another firm. For this project, I was tasked to redraw Casadetodos (by Veronica Arcos) in Atelier Bow Wow’s Graphic Anatomy Style.

Foundation Studio Models

Studio tutors: Helen Day and Phil Burns

First year of architecture school comprised of new vocabulary, material experimentation and grasping the idea of designing through ‘space’. Back then, our models were an exploration of the potentials of the negative space in our bedroom. At that point, my introduction to architecture was rather bizarre and dream-like.

Our models were sculpted in the following: timber prioritising the horizontal circulation, plastic prioritising the vertical circulation and metal prioritising the vertical circulation. Afterwards, these models were embedded into a landscape that would connect with each other.

Our messiest but one of the liveliest moments in first year.

Umeda Infiltration

Tutors: Ari Seligmann, Evie Blackman

This project was based in (Umeda) located in Umekita, Osaka, Japan. As the site has proposals that suggests having high rise and a central green space, we challenged the potentials of the site and how it could connect better with Umekita. While working with students from Kobe University, we proposed an ‘Oasis’ that would allow the population to relax and restore themselves from their hectic schedule. Umeda Infiltration focuses on extending the Oasis into the crevices among the city. As I am fascinated with the interstitial spaces between buildings that would later turn into rubbish dumps otherwise stackable car parks - I wanted to change those spaces. This is achieved through several surface explorations - stretch, roll and wrap.

The following is the individual extension project after collaborating with students from Kobe University.

Amelie is the Hero

Tutor: Antra Svarcs

This segment is a part of my Illustration for Narrative elective during my masters. I’ve always been fascinated by illustrations, and how the composition of lines, colouring and placement could affect the complete narrative. Amelie is the Hero is part of the ‘Heroes’ assignment, where we had to re-imagine an on-screen character in a heroic manner. Growing up with rose-tinted lens for Amelie, I imagined her internal dialogue with her love interest Nino prior to their actual meeting. Below, I depicted her rescuing Nino in your classic knight-in-shining-amour ways. Gender flipping the roles was pretty fun!

Re: Reflect

Studio led by Timothy Moore and Georgia Nowak.

Re: is focused on the challenging topic of designing for Australia’s darkest history: The Frontier Wars. There was a lot of moral dilemma in this project - we didn’t have constant communication with the Indigenous Australians, moreover, I didn’t feel I had the right to design something that holds a lot of trauma. My studio design questions on how architecture can serve as a backdrop for people to communicate and share their feelings within a semi-enclosed and maze-like environment. The space does not hold physical information, but rather just the thoughts and feelings of those who visit the project.

The following are selected collages of the spaces of the environment. These collages were designed via a series of poems written specifically from different visitors’ feelings when visiting the installation.

The Theory

This project drew on a lot of written thoughts and text. Below is a condensed explanation of what contributed to this setup. I was inspired by ‘the doorway effect’ in which people’s psychology shifts in-between spaces. Given that the context of the project was rather confronting and overwhelming, I applied this theory, allowing people to shift their thoughts as they transition through space.

Connectable

Tutors: Jacqui Alexander, Amiee Groundwater

The effects of AirBnB was certainly palpable. “Connectable” is a scheme which responds to the Government’s ‘Social Housing Renewal Program” implemented recently and expect to cause drastic effects on the social housing demographic. My partner, Preeti Shukla and I, studied the effects of the Sharing Economy and applied its principles to our project, forming an architecture critique towards this trending economy. The project tackles on mass production of houses that can be fitted in residents’ backyards to accommodate the would-be displaced social housing residents. So while idealistically the idea appears to be thoughtful, the intentions are rather dystopic.

Do You Believe in Astrology?

Studio tutor: Evie Blackman

Third year project: an exploration of designing for a specific culture. I picked horoscope readers personally because of the effects astrology has on different readers. This project primarily focused on exploring the various atmospheres related to the stereotyped personalities of each zodiac. Prior to this project, we were tasked to understanding the concepts of well-known architecture, challenging us on how obvious and literal their designs were.

You can find more about the full process of my project here and my experimental blog here.
